Online Craps

How to Play

Craps is a game that if played correctly has favorable odds to the player.  In fact when played correctly the house advantage is usually between 0.8% and 0.6% – depending on the free odds the casino allows.  The game is played with two dice controlled by a stickman, and two dealers who handle the bets.

Before the first roll (the come out roll) each player must decide if they are betting with the shooter (pass line bet) or against the shooter (don’t pass line bet).  If you  bet with the shooter you are betting the shooter rolls a 7 or eleven on the first roll, or that the shooter makes the point (explained later) before crapping out.  Betting against the shooter means you are betting the shooter will roll a 2 or 3 on the come out roll, or they will roll a 7 before making the point.

If the come out roll is a 7 or 11, the shooter and all pass line bets win.  These bets are all paid at even money.  If the shooter rolls a 2,3, or 12 on the come out roll the shooter craps out and all pass line bets lose.  Don’t pass bets are only paid if the shooter rolls a 2 or 3 to ensure the house advantage stays the same as pass line bets, 1.4%. If the come out roll is any of the following: 4,5,6,8,9,10, the specific number rolled becomes the point to make before rolling a 7.  The shooter keeps rolling until he rolls the point (winner) or a 7 (crapping out).

Pass/Don’t Pass Line Bets

These bets pay even money.  Players can place a pass line bet before or after the point is established, but the bet may not be removed once placed.  Don’t pass bets must be placed before the come out roll.

Free Odds Bets

Free odds bets decrease the house advantage because they are paid at true odds and therefore the house advantage is 0% on free odds.  The house advantage diminishes as the free odds multiples increase.  Most casinos offer two times odds which means you can take the free odds up to twice the value of your original bet. Free odds bets are placed after the point is already established.  The bet is placed directly behind the pass line bet or to the side of the don’t pass bet.

Come/Don’t Come Bets

Works the same way as the Pass/Don’t Pass line bets, the difference is they are placed after the come out roll once the point has already been established.  Once the point is established and the shooter rolls to make his point or crap out, his/her first roll after making the point is the come out roll for the come/don’t come bet.

Free odds are also available for Come/Don’t come bets and work the same as Pass/Don’t Pass line bets with one exception – free odds come bets are not in play for subsequent come out rolls.   For example letssay  the pass point is 8 and the shooter rolls a 5 for the come point.  You then take the odds on the come point (original bet $10 – odds bet $20).  If the shooter rolls a 8, the pass line gets paid.  His next roll is the come out roll.  If he rolls a 7 you lose the come bet of $10, but the $20 odds bet is returned to you.

Place/Don’t Place numbers Bets

You may place a bet that the shooter will make a certain number 4,5,6,8,9,10, before rolling a 7.  This bet is placed after the come out roll and can be added to, decreased, or removed before the next roll.  These bets are working on all roll except the come out roll.

Don’t place bets are bets that the shooter will roll a 7 before rolling a particular number.  The bet can be added to, reduced, or removed prior to the next roll.  Working on all rolls except the come out roll.

Buy Bets/Lay Bets

The casino takes a 5% commission on these bets.  They work the same as a place numbers bet only are placed differently and the casino hold is different – the casino takes the commission even if you decide to remove the bet.  They pay off at true odds.  Working on all rolls except subsequent come out rolls.

Lay bets are similar in concept to Don’t Place numbers bets.  This bets also carries a 5% commission.  They pay off at true odds.  Working on all rolls except subsequent come out rolls.

The strategy for craps is knowing the odds and taking them when favorable.  Because the casino advantage only diminishes when free odds bets are used, players should concentrate on these bets and do not take the bets which give the casino a higher edge (up to 16.67% on any 7).  In other words stay away from all bets other than Pass and Come line bets, and take the free odds available.
